This is a sacred time to honor the souls who’ve crossed the rainbow bridge and remind them they’re still part of our hearts.
What is it exactly?
Día de los Muertos is a vibrant Mexican tradition (Oct 27-Nov 2) where families welcome back the spirits of loved ones who’ve passed. The veil between worlds is thin, so we celebrate life, not fear death. Families build ofrendas (altars) with photos, candles, marigolds, sugar skulls (calaveras de azúcar) and favorite foods to guide and welcome the souls.
October 27 is now widely recognized as the day to honor our pets who’ve crossed the rainbow bridge, letting us invite their spirits home with love.
This ritual turns longing into gratitude, memory into presence. It says: we remember you with joy. Death didn’t win, love did.
Create your own altar for furbabies lost
What you’ll need:
🕯 A candle (white or marigold-colored)
🌼 Marigolds or bright orange/yellow flowers
📸 A photo of your beloved pet(s)
🍖 A small treat or favorite food they loved
💫 Optional: A cozy blanket, incense, or their collar/tag
How to:
1. Choose a quiet space and set up a small ofrenda (altar)
2. Arrange your candle, flowers, photo, and offering.
3. Light the candle and say your pet’s name out loud, thank them for the love and lessons they gave you.
4. You can play soft music, say a prayer, or simply sit in gratitude. I like to tell them how much I miss and love them still.
5. When you’re done, blow out the candle and imagine their light shining on in your heart. It’s normal to cry and feel a bit drained afterwards, but dedicating some time to honor their energy and love that still connects you is everything. 🖤
🕯 This ritual connects you to your pet’s spirit through love, because energy never disappears, it only transforms. 💛
